Southern Oregon Polestar Outdoors Chapter

Mentoring Youth Through Hunting, Fishing & Outdoor Activities

Help Your Son or Daughter Grow Through Outdoor Activities

Polestar Outdoors aims to instill safe and enjoyable hunting and fishing practices in students. Whether your child is a beginner or has no prior experience, we’re here to guide them every step of the way.

Founded in Cody, Wyoming, we’re excited to bring a new Chapter to Southern Oregon. We are currently accepting student applications to learn hunting and fishing and plan to expand into other outdoor activities as we grow. Parents are welcome to join the adventure and learn these skills alongside their children.

Frequently Asked Questions

Student/Guardian FAQs

What does the name and logo mean?

The name POLESTAR means ‘centrally focused”! The North Star (Polaris) is the centrally located star in the northern hemisphere — and therefore is known as our pole star. As a Christian organization we want to point to our spiritual pole star, Jesus Christ. Having selected the North Star as a representation of the cross, our “centrally focused mission.”

You say your program teaches hunting skills, hunter ethics and Christian principles — what does this mean?

As our mission statement highlights, we are dedicated to teaching youth essential life skills and guiding them to discover the true meaning of life. We achieve this through outdoor sports and activities, particularly hunting and fishing. At POLESTAR OUTDOORS, we believe that becoming a good and ethical sportsman requires learning techniques that enhance both success and enjoyment. Moreover, we encourage mentors and students to embrace their role in nature by applying Judeo-Christian principles to conservation practices, the ethical use of resources, and a deep appreciation for wildlife.

How are mentors selected?

Mentors are selected by the directors of the program. They must go through evaluations as far as hunting and fishing skills and knowledge of the laws, willingness and ability to contribute to the activity they are involved in (e.g. provide transportation, use of personal equipment, such as fishing poles, shotguns, rifle, etc.). Further they are required to sign an authorization for a complete background check. The final step is to check with appropriate clergy to see if there are any known reasons why a potential mentor should not be authorized to work with students.

How are students selected? What qualifications must they demonstrate before participating?

Our program is primarily designed to accommodate students who have no other avenue to enter the outdoor recreation world, however, we do not limit this! Basically, any student who wants to enter the program is allowed (provided there are enough mentors). The student applies by filling our student application and liability release form which must be signed by a parent or guardian, and they must also show that they have all necessary state permits to do the activity requested. Many of the students have not had the opportunity to obtain field skills and/or state permits, so we can assist through this process. They must demonstrate the willingness to learn! POLESTAR OUTDOORS does have a Hunter Safety Course authorized by Wyoming Game and Fish Department. If a student desires to hunt, they must accompany their mentor two or three time before going into the field. This is required to demonstrate safe and proficient use of a firearm.

Can a student be removed from the program and who makes this decision?

POLESTAR OUTDOORS reserves the right to remove any student participant for behavior deemed inappropriate. Ensuring the absolute safety of all participants is our top priority. Any violation of safety protocols will result in the removal of the student, a decision made by the Program Director with input from a mentor. Similarly, mentors may also be dismissed from the program “without cause. "Every student entrusted to POLESTAR OUTDOORS is managed with utmost safety, respect, and professionalism. All mentors serve at the discretion of the directors. For the record, no student or mentor has been removed to date.

What if the student doesn’t want the game meat?

POLESTAR OUTDOORS has a program where deserving families are identified and are provided unwanted game meat. For many students this is a great way of getting involved in this charitable effort and provide to those less fortunate. Please check local laws and restrictions before donating game meat.

Mentor FAQs

How does POLESTAR OUTDOORS support its mentors?

POLESTAR OUTDOORS connects mentors with approved hunting and fishing venues. We lease or receive donations of large tracts of land from landowners for hunting purposes. These areas are carefully managed by POLESTAR OUTDOORS to support specific wildlife populations through measures such as planting food plots, providing irrigation, and more.

To enhance the experience, POLESTAR OUTDOORS offers equipment including blinds, rifles, shooting gear, and meat processing tools. Additionally, we provide comprehensive training for mentors, covering field skills, hunter ethics, and methods for sharing Christian testimonies with students in selected venues. We’ve also developed a series of thoughtful questions to help mentors foster conversations about God’s creation, Christian ethics, conservation versus preservation, and related topics.

Does participating as a mentor involve any financial obligations?

Yes, though these costs are typically minimal. Most of our activities take place within a short driving distance, but mentors are responsible for their own transportation. In certain cases, mentors may also need to provide items like field lunches, lures, or camouflage gear. These needs can vary greatly by individual, and we’re committed to offering support to ensure this isn’t a barrier for participation.

What equipment is provided to students and mentors?

POLESTAR OUTDOORS is working to expand its inventory to better support our participants. Our target audience includes students who often have little to no field experience and arrive with minimal gear. To address this, we aim to provide essential items such as basic clothing, firearms, and fishing equipment. Our focus remains on keeping these provisions simple while ensuring students have positive experiences as they learn the skills needed to become lifelong outdoor adventurers. Many students already come prepared with items like warm jackets, sturdy shoes, and rain gear, which allow them to make the most of their time enjoying the outdoors.

Who is responsible for selecting locations and determining field practices for the program?

This is done by the Founders and Board of Directors. Mentors are required to follow our lead.

What do landowners get out of participation in the program?

This is a very exciting aspect of the program. Landowners get a great sense of satisfaction from witnessing the students use their land. They appreciate our strong teaching emphasis on landowner respect, respect for private property, hunter safety, hunter ethics, etc. Landowners are an integral part of the program and most want to genuinely help.

How can I get a copy of POLESTAR OUTDOOR’S Articles of Organization, Operating Agreement and/or Financial Statements?
